The Peritoneal Dialysis Difference

Peritoneal Dialysis is performed by infusing cleansing solution (dialysate) into the abdominal cavity through a small catheter.  Two types of peritoneal dialysis are available:  Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) and Continuous Cycling Peritoneal Dialysis (CCPD).  More detail is provided below.

CAPD

-Patient performs manual exchanges (draining of old fluid and infusion of new fluid) 4-6 times per day.
-Does not involve the use of a machine.

CCPD

-Uses a machine called a Cycler.
-Patients typically hook up to Cyler in the evening and dialyze for 8-10 hours per night.
-Some patients may require additional manual exchanges of fluid during the day.
